Known as a Diffusion Label (or Line) you may already be familiar with these alternate styles from your favourite designers. Starting in the 1980s with Armani, Prada followed suit in the ‘90s with Miu Miu and Marc by Marc Jacobs – of course, by Marc Jacobs, was launched in 2001. Since then, a string of designers have followed suit, even extending into department and chain fashion store collaborations (think Karl Lagerfeld, Stella McCartney and Versace). Offering a new range of customers a limited edition chance to get a slice of designer pie.

EVERYDAY INSPIRATION
Every now and then, we get a little inspired about a designer’s story -particularly one that observes, and then infuses worldly experiences into their work. Add to that, satisfying a fashionable world audience for 15 years.


In this case, we are awestruck by Danish based designer Keld Mikkelsen of DAY Birger et Mikkelsen. If the maxim “you are the sum of all your experiences” is true, then Mikkelsen sets the design standard. Spending his formative fashion years in Asia, Mikkelsen pays tribute to the traditional motifs and craftsmanship techniques of far off places and times. Weaving the tapestries of the colonial Far East, flea market finds and the silent film era, he intersects them with homage to his home base of Copenhagen.
 
A WELL-TO-DO ETHOS
The label, launched when the designer was 39, exudes a well-travelled, well-wearing and well-heeled energy. Embellishments, masculine inclinations, juxtaposed prints, patterns, edging and weaves are intricately balanced.

Everyday, wearable glamour is what emerges.

A CULTURAL INTERMIX
And then there is the avant-garde approach to intermixing the collection’s styles. The paisley silk print of yesteryear sits comfortably under today’s trendy black puffy coat and ankle boot. A wide-brimmed hat refreshingly tops off an embroidered silk blouse, with grey and brown knit layering. Poetic pink cinematic printed silk is clenched with a contemporary, thick cuff.
