Front Row Interview: Christopher Esber and Australian Avant Guarde

Since his debut in 2010, womenswear (and now menswear) designer
Christopher Esber has become a prominent figure within the Australian
fashion industry. Esber increasingly brings the
avant guarde appeal the Australian fashion industry needs to compete on a global scale. Esber sat down
with Frockaholics just before his Spring/Summer 2012 show to discuss the
inspiration behind his current collection, the key elements he incorporates into all of his designs, and the aspects every piece needs
in order to sell.

First off, thank you very much
for agreeing to answer some of our questions. I know you’re probably swamped
with your upcoming show, but before we get into that, what are you doing right
now?

I'm currently putting the final
touches onto my next collection and getting ready for the show. It’s a crazy
time.

How do you begin when you set out
to design a new collection?

Every season my point of
inspiration changes. It might be an album or an artwork, or even somebody I’ll
see walking down the street. This season there was a film playing on my mind, “The
Long Kiss Goodnight”, and from that, I got to thinking about the garb of
fencing and karate; and the romance, danger and hard-edged femininity of the
women who are engaged in the sport.

From there, I’ll work that
inspiration back into my classic formula: sharp, strong tailoring
interpreted through a clean design aesthetic.

What do you think is the most
important aspect for a garment to have in order to sell?

There has to be an element of classicism but re-interpreted in a way that’s fresh and exciting
for the customer. And clothing shouldn’t wear you; there has to be space for
the customer to apply their own interpretation.

What would you be doing if you
weren’t a designer?

Creating is a big part of who I am; if I wasn’t
designing clothes then I’d be sculpting or painting or involved in some other
element of design.
